Library and Knowledge Services

The library provides access to a wide range of evidence-based resources to support clinical care and professional development for all Gateshead Health staff and students on placement in the Trust.

The Trust library is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, online and in person. Out of hours access is via a door code. Please ask staff for further details.

To use the library you will need a library account (Join the Library) and an NHS OpenAthens password.

The library is located in the Clinical Skills Centre (Purple Zone), Queen Elizabeth Hospital, NE9 6SX.

Staffed helpdesk service Mon, Wed-Fri 9-5, Tue 9-6

- 16 PC’s with access to Internet, Office, and Endnote (any other specialist software?) Login using your Trust user ID and password.

- Use unencrypted memory sticks.

- Ipads for loan.

- Printing, photocopying and scanning is available free of charge 24/7. Colour printing is available during staffed hours and is charged at 10p per single A4 sheet 15p per double-sided A4 sheet.

- Access to print books and journals.

- Self-service borrowing and return (you will need your library card).

- Study spaces and quiet study room.

- Medical board games.

Your Online Library

Many library services and resources are available online and can be used off-site including evidence based point of care tool UptoDate (link to UptoDate here).

Library catalogue – search books available in the Trust library and other NHS librarias. Log in with your library barcode number and password to reserve or renew books.

Online research – use your NHS OpenAthens password to unlock millions of research articles which the library subscribes to on your behalf. Use our one stop Discovery search to find research on topics across all sources. Alternatively search by Journal or Resource

More about your library

As part of the Trust’s Learning and Development Agreement with Health Education England, the Library and Knowledge Service completes an annual self-assessment against national standards for NHS Libraries.

In 2017 compliance of 97% was achieved, a significant result which reflects the range and quality of services provided.


  • A member of library staff will respond to all enquiries on the same day (provided they are submitted by 4pm).
  • The library will obtain a copy of an article or book within 5 working days of the request being submitted.
  • Suggestions for stock will be made available to the user within 10 working days of the request being submitted.
  • Clinical questions/literature searches: A comprehensive search will be carried out on a range of appropriate databases and results returned by email to the user.
  • Urgent requests will be satisfied within 2 working days.
  • Non-urgent requests will be satisfied within 10 working days.

The strategy has been developed following extensive user consultation and is closely aligned to the national Knowledge for Healthcare Strategy.


Copyright is the right to prevent others copying or reproducing someone’s work. NHS organisations have many copyright works in their care. The majority of materials handled each day by library staff are protected.

Some are covered by the CLA licence, some by an eLicence, everything else is covered by copyright law.
