Training and skills support

The library offers specialist information skills training and research advice to all Gateshead Health NHS staff and students on placement.

Training sessions usually take place in the Library IT Training room and are offered to groups and on a 1-1 basis.

This workshop provides the skills you need to carry out a basic search on NHS Evidence and healthcare databases.

At the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Register for an Athens username and password
  • Carry out a basic subject search on NHS Evidence and the healthcare databases
  • Access NHS and library full text articles

The aim of this session is to ensure that participants have an understanding of the process of literature searching and feel confident in devising and carrying out effective searches.

At the end of this session you will be able to:

  • Formulate clinical questions
  • Devise search strategies based on these questions
  • Apply searching skills using NHS Evidence and healthcare databases

This session is aimed at Healthcare professionals or managers who are new to critical appraisal. It will examine the principles of critical appraisal to support evidence-based practice. Part of the session involves facilitated critical appraisal of a clinical paper. As a group, participants will share experience and knowledge in order to critically appraise a published paper.

By the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • Use the CASP checklist to identify key issues to consider when appraising randomised controlled trials
  • Understand some of the basic statistics quoted in clinical papers e.g. relative risk, absolute risk, number needed to treat and confidence intervals
  • Interpret the evidence from research papers and decide whether it could be used locally to improve healthcare outcomes

This session provides an overview of Endnote reference management software.

By the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • Download references from online sources into an Endnote Library
  • Create folders within a library to organise references
  • Import references from the library into Word documents using the “cite while you write” facility

  • The principles and importance of correct referencing
  • How to reference a book and journal article using the Harvard referencing style
  • Locate books and journal articles from a reading list
  • Carry out a search for journal articles on health databases such as Cinahl and Medline
