The library subscribes to a wide range of journals and databases supporting clinical practice, management and continuing professional development, including revalidation.

In some cases a particular resource may be very useful to search individually for example nurses may often use ‘Royal Marsden’, or you may want to search the ‘UpToDate’ clinical reference service

For in depth research or current awareness the Library subscribes to numerous journal titles which you may like to browse or search individually.

Find a print journal

Print journals can be located by carrying out a Discovery search above or by browsing the journals in the library. New issues can be found next to the IT training room, older issues can be found next to the bookshelves in the main collection.

Find an online journal

An OpenAthens account allows you to access a range of quality information online. Users can access Healthcare Databases Advanced Search (HDAS) and nationally purchased content, including bibliographic databases from: Ovid (Medline, Embase, AMED, HMIC and PsycINFO) ProQuest (BNI) full-text databases from EBSCO (Cinahl and Health Business Elite) journals from the BMJ and JAMA collections.

You may also be able to access extra content which has been purchased in your region or by your organisation.

The list below is not exhaustive but lists some of the major, most used research resources.

High quality authoritative evidence-based information NHS Evidence Services (NICE) are a suite of services that provide internet access to high quality authoritative evidence-based health, public health and social care information.


HDAS provides access to an extensive set of journals and bibliographic databases. These are purchased by NICE on behalf of the NHS.

Access to full-text articles within these databases is available via Athens log in.


CKS provide primary care practitioners with access to evidence-based guidance on over 300 key conditions presenting in primary care.


The Cochrane Library is a collection of six databases containing high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision-making, and a seventh database that provides information about Cochrane groups.


Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust Evidence Hub is a tailored current awareness service helping you to stay abreast of the most recent evidence to support practice.


Trip is a clinical search engine designed to allow users to quickly and easily find and use high-quality research evidence to support their practice and/or care.


UpToDate is a clinical reference service which aims to provide answers to clinical questions which arise in daily practice.
