Background

Journals@Ovid is an aggregated online database of all the journals available via the Ovid platform. These journals are from a variety of sources, principally, Lippincott®, Williams & Wilkins (LWW), from societies as well as from partnering publishers. The actual journals in full-text that you have access to will depend upon the selection of journal packages (2), groups of journals or individual publications your institution has subscribed to. Be sure to check with your librarian.

Accessible via the Ovid platform, collections of full-text journals as well as single publications can be searched on and across using Ovid's powerful search functionality. Journal content can be displayed and retrieved in PDF format. Or alternatively in the browser-based Ovid Full Text format, which in turn facilitates targeted navigation through the journal's content using the Outline feature. This format also enables the provision of information sharing and export via Tools.

  • Journals@Ovid is an aggregated online database of hundreds of scientific, technical, and medical journals.
  • The Ovid Full Text Collections are subsets of journals combined for local access.
  • The journals covered are from over 50 publishers and societies.
  • Each journal is nevertheless available by individual subscription.
  • Purchase of any of Ovid's Full Text journals, provides access to all the bibliographic citations in the database.
  • The bibliographic citation information includes the title, references and abstract (where available) for each database record, all of which are searchable.
     

Training Session Programme

This Learning Pathway series of training modules draws upon the content and teaching approaches in and behind the learning resource OvidGO! (3). Constructed around a selection of focused searches, the training programme has been designed to achieve the following two objectives,

  1. to introduce the database, Journals@Ovid, drawing upon where helpful, parallels and comparisons with Ovid MEDLINE,
  2. to discuss, demonstrate and practice the key features and functionality of the database Journals@Ovid.

This Focused Search looks at a couple of specific database fields often used on Journals@Ovid. These two database fields make use of the resource being a full-text information repository. The Caption Text (CT) field draws upon the presence of labelled images and graphics in the full-text of articles. Similarly the References (RF) field draw upon the presence of lists of references that conventionally conclude scientific articles. These information items, occurring in the original publication, are captured during indexing and processing, made available as part of the database record and thus searchable. 

CAPTION TEXT (CT)
According to the Journals@Ovid Database Guide (1) “(t)he Caption Text (CT) field includes the descriptive text for tables, figures, and other graphics as they appear in the journal in which the document was published.” This information segment can be searched on specifically, using the format ‘term.ct.’ where term can be a single expression or a group of words, for example, ‘stents.ct.’ or ‘drug-eluting coronary stent*.ct.’

REFERENCES (RF)
In this database field the Journals@Ovid Database Guide (1) informs us that the References (RF) “field includes complete bibliographic citations for the publications cited by authors in full text documents. These references can be viewed along with the citation or with full text.” Further that when searching in this section of a publication, consideration be given to “words typically found in a reference”, for example, words in document title, journal name or abbreviation, author name, page number, or year.

Points to note:

  • Images, graphs and tables are also major sources of information accompanying and supplementing the text-based elements of the scientific literature.
  • In Journals@Ovid the labelling of images, graphs and tables, together with accompanying, descriptive text has been captured and indexed in the field entitled Caption Text (CT).
  • Although lists of references are conventionally appended to scientific journals, not all abstracting and indexing (A&I) databases capture this information.
  • PubMed abstracts, and hence Ovid MEDLINE, include references when available. “Reference lists are available for citations to full text articles included in the open access subset of PMC and for citations where the publisher supplied references in the citation data sent to PubMed.” See the quoted source PubMed User Guide for details.
